COMMUNITY WAVE

2022 • Gloucester City, NJ

The Wave is a permanent public art installation in Gloucester City, New Jersey as part of the city’s waterfront redevelopment plan. The design of the installation focuses on community engagement, integration of the city's history as fishing town and modern harbor, and sustainable, environmental design. A festival was held in November 2015 for nearly 300 community members to paint on fish sculptures what Gloucester means to them.

The design focuses on preserving the defining qualities of the historic seaport while looking forward to its future as a modern, industrialized harbor. The structure is curved and wave-like; transparent and fluid. Community engagement was essential for its creation to foster a special connection to their city and public space that was ultimately lost before. The wave features the hundreds of painted fish sculptures along its sides. The unique artwork is representative of individualization within a growing and unified community.
