Much like living ecosystems, memories breathe, evolve and decay, thriving on sensory data and being remembered. Right before corals die, they turn from bleach white (already a marker of dying) into vibrant, fluorescent colors for a moment. Scientists say it’s a coral’s last plea to us to remember and recognize them as an integral part of life on earth. Our memories, similarly, shimmer in their final moments with lasting remnants: a sound, smell, or feeling, reminding us what’s vital to our living.
